The Hybrid Series
Posted on: 2008-09-29 15:55:33 by CobusEven though it would've been very apt, unfortunately i dont have access to a drumroll..
the new set of video's will be called the HYBRID Series :)
the reason for this (firstly) is that i've incorporated my electronic drumkit with the acoustics, these trigger pads allow me to trigger whatever sounds i wish while playing on conventional acousitc drums.. which, needless to say, is pretty insane. The result is a "hybrid" between acoustics and electronics, and is also really really REALLY fun ;) and i very much hope it translates honestly to video. Secondly, i chose it because it also just sounds so damn cool, haha ;)
(check out the new photo album for some snaps of the Hybrid Series kit set-up)
The set-list have changed a bit.. a lot of songs have been added, at the moment it consists of 15 songs (not counting the 11-song Tribute video) aswell as a full-length solo, plus looooaaaads of behind the scenes stuff and me actually speaking into the camera (can you say "impending stagefright"?). It's going to be a big one, folks :) I'm undoubtably just as excited as you are. I'll keep you updated as soon as anything unfolds :) Check out the new photo album for picture updates. Pictures of the mixer, microphone and multi-PC set-up is next, will upload that tomorrow. The day after that i'll add the camera set-up.
Lastly, thank you guys SO much for all the emails and comments and support. Corniness aside, i've put an INSANE amount of effort into this series and it's NOT becuase of the sponsors or anything else, it's because of you. I'm just a regular guy from South Africa, so "fanmail" and support from right around the world never even closely becomes boring, I appreciate it way much more than you think :)
Keep well, more updates to follow soon..
The Hybrid Series is finally on its way, woohooooo!

ps,
To date the series with the most camera angles was the Tri-Cam series, it gives me great pleasure to say that that record will be shattered to pieces ;)
August 2008 Series (yet to be named..)
Posted on: 2008-09-04 11:00:18 by CobusIt gives me great pleasure to finally announce the set list for my new 5th series! It will consist of 5 songs 'covered in typically my style, as well as a 'Tribute' type video (will explain that below) consisting of 11 songs. but before I elaborate, here is the set list:
Angels and Airwaves - Love Like Rockets
Vanilla Sky - Umbrella
Sum41 - Fat Lip (10% Faster)
Avenged Sevenfold - Afterlife (with doublebass)
Breaking Benjamin - The Diary of Jane (with doublebass)
A TRIBUTE:
Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness (intro)
Blink-182 - Anthem Pt. II
Blink-182 - First Date
Box Car Racer - There Is (small interlude)
Blink-182 - I Miss You
Biffy Clyro - 57
Linkin Park - Faint
Dream Theatre - New Millennium (3/8 variation, middle piece)
Dream Theatre - Fatal Tragedy (Shrink+Grow)
Liquid Tension Experiment - Universal Mind (8+7/8 piece)
Dream Theater - Octavarium (outtro)
The Tribute video contains snippets and pieces from songs that inspired me most through my drumming career. Due to the 10minute constraint, it only consists of a select few songs that have been part of my drumming career, there are obviously a LOT more songs that have contributed to my style in a very big way.. but I just chose a small small amount for logistic reasons. These are all mixed together seamlessly (and in quite a cool way, might I add, hehe) so I am very excited about recording this, seeing as it is something completely different. Because it will contain some 'Dream Theater' and 'Liquid Tension Experiment' songs, this will be by far my most technical work to date..
As well as my regular covers, the new series will also have a SOLO in it, finally :) Nothing I have actually written down or planned out note for note (anybody that knows me knows that is not even CLOSELY my style) so it will mostly be an improvised piece, as expressive as possible. I have a few cool ideas for it though, it won't bore you, promise :)
On top of this and lastly it will include a 'monologue' type of video (saying it's a 'monologue' is just a fancy way of saying it's going to be a boring speech..) wherein I will just speak about some random stuff I feel needs to be said, as well as a 'Tour' and explanation of my complete kit, recording set-up and gear, ended with a short explanation of the post production and editing phase. This video will also include a small expo on my electronic kit, where I will explain, note for note, some rolls and patterns you guys have been asking about.
Anyway, I think that's it for the moment.. I have no idea when I’ll have time to record and post this, but it will be as soon as possible, I promise you that. Just keep an eye on this page as it is by far the best place for updates and whatnot..
thanks for reading all the way through this whole boring post ;)
keep it real people. booya.
Laus Deo Semper,
~CobusHello all rockers!
Posted on: 2008-05-03 05:09:35 by NiklasMy name is Niklas and, as Cobus said, I'm the webdesigner and programmer on this website. I noticed a few problems on the site yesterday and I even got a email about it (which was superb) and now it should be fixed. The error was on the video section where you only were able to view one video. If you find any errors don't hesitate to contact me on niklas@cobuspotgieter.com and I will do my best to fix the bug. You might even have Ideas on how to expand the site? Send an email to me.
I hope you enjoy the current content on the site. The DVD quality videos and Studio Quality Audio recordings are superb! You are more then welcome to share this cobuspotgieter.com link around to your friends. Hopefully we will be able to rather soon open our own forums and user accounts so you will be able to share your comments and rank the videos!
As I said, enjoy the site and let me and Cobus know what you think about it! Take care now and make sure to view those videos and read the FAQ! Hey! =)
Posted on: 2008-04-13 15:43:24 by CobusThis is Cobus, would just like to say welcome to the site!
We (the webmaster Niklas, and I) have been working on this site for a while (and by 'working' I mean Niklas does absolutely everything and I try to give some annoying pointers here and there..) but please keep in mind, it is still a work in progress, we'll always try to improve the site and add the things you guys want.
At the moment we have quite a bit of info on here, VERY detailed descriptions of all the equipment I use, aswell as a FAQ for all the questions I so very very regularly receive :) A forum and community project is underway, depending on the amount of attention the site receives.
The main attraction, in my opinion, is the DVD Quality Video and the Studio Quality Audio downloads, so please feel free to check those out! The audio files are encoded in standard mp3 compression, so think you will have no trouble with that. The videos are encoded in Xvid compression, if you have trouble with that just try downloading the newest codecs, and I can also recommend using VLC media player.
Please have a look around, and enjoy your stay :)
Keep well guys,
~cobus
